Franklin B. Saksena: Color Atlas of Local and Systemic Manifestations of Cardiovascular Disease

Color Atlas of Local and Systemic Manifestations of Cardiovascular Disease

Description

This brief guide to visual diagnosis helps the novice develop -- and the veteran refresh -- crucial skills that can spare the patient unnecessary testing and bring the physician one step closer to an accurate diagnosis. Dr Saksena draws on his years of experience in teaching and training to show you the physical signs of cardiovascular disease that can be spotted by visual examination. For each sign, a color photograph is paired with explanatory text that: * describes the significant features of the sign * explains its use in diagnosis * identifies the likeliest causes The book provides corroboration of physical signs and other diagnostic information whenever possible and offers extensive references for further study. After an opening chapter on general observations, the author describes signs that can be found in the face, ear, mouth and nose, neck, hand, upper extremity, thorax and back, abdomen, and lower extremity. An appendix covers rarer syndromes associated with cardiovascular disease. Whether you are just developing your diagnostic skills or want to be better able to identify signs of cardiovascular disease, you can count on this atlas for dependable advice.

Losing My Mind: An Intimate Look at Life with Alzheimer's

Description

"We are foolish, those of us who think we can escape the traps of aging," writes Tom DeBaggio. "I was one of them, dreaming of a perfect and healthy old age....Now, at fifty-eight, I realize the foolishness of my dreams as I watch my brain self-destruct from Alzheimer's." Losing My Mind is DeBaggio's extraordinary account of his early onset Alzheimer's, a disease that "silently hollows the brain" and slowly "gobbles memory and destroys life." But with DeBaggio's curse came an unexpected blessing: the ability to chart the mechanics and musings of his failing mind. Whether describing the happy days of his youth or lamenting over the burden his disease has placed upon his loved ones, DeBaggio manages to inspire the reader with his ability to function, to think, and ultimately to survive. By turns an autobiography, a medical history, and a book of meditations, Losing My Mind is a testament to the splendor of memory and a triumphant celebration of the human spirit.

Dave Gerr: The Elements of Boat Strength: For Builders, Designers and Owners

The Elements of Boat Strength: For Builders, Designers and Owners

Description

'This work is significant. It is the first to include a method of assessing structural strength in the context of the modern marine environment' -Commander M. C. Cruder, "U.S. Coast Guard". Acclaimed author and naval architect, Dave Gerr created this unique system of easy-to-use scantling rules and rules-of-thumb for calculating the necessary dimensions, or scantlings, of hulls, decks, and other boat parts, whether built of fiberglass, wood, wood-epoxy composite, steel, or aluminum. In addition to the rules themselves, "The Elements of Boat Strength" offers their context: an in-depth, plain-English discussion of boatbuilding materials, methods, and practices that will guide you through all aspects of boat construction. Now you can avoid wading through dense technical engineering manuals or tackling advanced mathematics. "The Elements of Boat Strength" has all the formulas, tables, illustrations, and charts you need to judge how heavy each piece of your boat should be in order to last and be safe. With this book, an inexpensive scientific calculator, and a pad of paper, you'll be able to design and specify all the components necessary to build a sound, long-lasting, rugged vessel. What reviewers have said about Dave Gerr's books: 'By far the best book available on the subject' - Sailing". 'The best layman's guide we've ever read' - "Practical Sailor". 'Dave Gerr and International Marine made a complicated topic understandable and put it into a handbook that is easy to use' - "WoodenBoat". 'Without doubt the definitive reference for selecting, installing, and understanding boat propellers' - "Royal Navy Sailing Association Journal" The Nature of Boats. 'If you are not nautically obsessed before reading this book, you will most certainly be afterward' - "Sailing". 'Fascinating potpourri of information about today's boats, modern and traditional' - "WoodenBoat".

Barry Schwartz, Steven Robbins, and new coauthor Edward Wasserman offer students an engaging introduction to the basic principles of Pavlovian conditioning, operant conditioning, and comparative cognition. The text's critical The Rough Guide to First-Time Europe free pdf approach exposes students to the unresolved problems and controversies surrounding behavior theory and encourages them to interpret the material and make connections between theories and real-life situations. With several hundred new references, a new emphasis on comparative cognition, and expanded treatment of neuroscience and the neural basis of learning, the Fifth Edition sets the standard in its coverage of contemporary theory and research. Amy is excited to meet her new stepsister Chloe...but it turns out Chloe doesn't feel the same way! Can Amy and Chloe get along?

In Fifty Years We'll All Be Chicks: ...and Other Complaints from an Angry Middle-Aged White Guy

Description

A couple years back, I was at the Phoenix airport bar. It was empty except for one heavy-set, gray bearded, grizzled guy who looked like he just rode his donkey into town after a long day of panning for silver in them thar hills. He ordered a Jack Daniels straight up, and that's when I overheard the young guy with the earring behind the bar asking him if he had ID. At first the old sea captain just laughed. But the guy with the twinkle in his ear asked again. At this point it became apparent that he was serious. Dan Haggerty's dad fired back, "You've got to be kidding me, son." The bartender replied, "New policy. Everyone has to show their ID." Then I watched Burl Ives reluctantly reach into his dungarees and pull out his military identification card from World War II. It's a sad and eerie harbinger of our times that the Oprah-watching, crystal-rubbing, Whole Foods-shopping moms and their whipped attorney husbands have taken the ability to reason away from the poor schlub who makes the Bloody Marys. What we used to settle with common sense or a fist, we now settle with hand sanitizer and lawyers. Adam Carolla has had enough of this insanity and he's here to help us get our collective balls back. "In Fifty Years We'll All Be Chicks" is Adam's comedic gospel of modern America. He rips into the absurdity of the culture that demonized the peanut butter and jelly sandwich, turned the nation's bathrooms into a lawless free-for-all of urine and fecal matter, and put its citizens at the mercy of a bunch of minimum wagers with axes to grind. Peppered between complaints Carolla shares candid anecdotes from his day to day life as well as his past Sunday football at Jimmy Kimmel's house, his attempts to raise his kids in a society that he mostly disagrees with, his big showbiz break, and much, much more. Brilliantly showcasing Adam's spot-on sense of humor, this book cements his status as a cultural commentator/comedian/complainer extraordinaire."

Ages and Stages: A Parent's Guide to Normal Childhood Development

Description

A comprehensive parent's guide to your child's psychological development from birth through age 10 Written in an engaging, practical style, Ages and Stages offers you the benefits of the most current research on child development, featuring helpful tips and techniques to foster your child's maturation. Charles Schaefer and Theresa Foy DiGeronimo tell you what behaviors you can expect as your child grows and how you can help him or her to advance to the next level of development. They include numerous examples, stories, and activities you can use immediately to positively influence your child's development. The book's structure (divided into four stages of child development--birth to 18 months, 18 to 36 months, 36 months to age six, and six to ten years) allows you to monitor your child's progress, identify the reasons for emotional and psychological differences in siblings, and even determine how your parenting strategies should change as your child grows. Covers all five areas of psychological health--emotional, cognitive, friendship/relationships, personal growth, and morality Filled with easy-to-follow Do's and Don'ts, plus fun activities and exercises to encourage your child's development Helps you assess if and when your child may need professional intervention

In Paddy Doyle's own words: 'It is about a society's abdication of responsibility to a child. The fact that I was that child, and that the book is about my life, is largely irrelevant. The probability is that there were, and still are, thousands of 'me's.' It is 1995 and Noa and Amir have decided to move in together. Noa is studying photography in Jerusalem and Amir is a psychology student in Tel Aviv, so they choose a tiny flat in a village in the hills, between the two cities. Their flat is separated from that of their landlords, Sima and Moshe Zakian, by a thin wall, but on each side we find a different home - and a different world. Homesick is a beautiful, clever and moving story about history, love, family and the true meaning of home. Deer Hunting with Jesus: Guns, Votes, Debt and Delusion in Redneck America

Description

Welcome to Winchester, Virginia - a town populated almost entirely by the under-educated, the over-weight and the dirt-poor. This is Joe Bageant's hometown, and in this text he shows how white working-class Americans have been exploited and betrayed by the very people - in big business and government - they put their faith in.

In Paddy Doyle's own words: 'It is about a society's abdication of responsibility to a child. The fact that I was that child, and that the book is about my life, is largely irrelevant. Has the World Gone Completely Mad...?: Unpublished Letters to The Daily Telegraph

Description

Readers of the Telegraph Letters Page will be fondly aware of the eclectic combination of learned wisdom, wistful nostalgia and robust good sense that characterise its correspondence. But what of the 95 per cent of the paper's huge postbag that never sees the light of day? Some of the best letters inevitably arrive too late for the 24/7 news cycle, or don't quite fit with the rest of the day's selection. Others are just a little too whimsical, or indeed too risque, to publish in a serious newspaper. And more than a few are completely and utterly (and wonderfully) mad. Thankfully Iain Hollingshead is on-hand to give the authors of the best unpublished letters the stage they so richly deserve. Baffled, furious, defiant, mischievous, they inveigh and speculate on every subject under the sun, from the rubbish on television these days to the venality of our MPs. The sixth book in the bestselling Unpublished Letters series, with an agenda as enticing as ever, As I Was Saying...will prove, once again, that the Telegraph's readers have an astute sense of what really matters.

Niall Ferguson follows the money to tell the human story behind the evolution of our financial system, from its genesis in ancient Mesopotamia to the latest upheavals on what he calls Planet Finance. What's more, Ferguson reveals financial history as the essential backstory behind all history, arguing that the evolution of credit and debt was as important as any technological innovation in the rise of civilization. As Ferguson traces the crisis from ancient Egypt's Memphis to today's Chongqing, he offers bold and compelling new insights into the rise? and fall?of not just money but Western power as well. THE TITAN'S SON FIGHTS ON An exclusive close-up at Dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. Starting on a personal note, Hughes takes us to the Rome he first encountered as a hungry twenty-one-year-old fresh from Australia in 1959. From there, he goes back more than two thousand years to Rabble-rouser for Peace: The Authorised Biography of Desmond Tutu ebook pdf the city s foundation, one mired in mythologies and superstitions that would inform Rome s development for centuries. He explores in rich detail the formation of empire, the rise of early Christianity, the Crusades, the Renaissance, and takes us up to the present, through the rise and fall of Mussolini s fascism. Equal parts idolizing, blasphemous, outraged, and awestruck, "Rome" is a portrait of the Eternal City as only Robert Hughes could paint it." This Little Book aims to demonstrate exciting ways to use washing lines to support learning in every area of the curriculum. We hope that this humble piece of household equipment will become as fundamental a piece of equipment in your setting as it has been in our homes.

Rabble-rouser for Peace: The Authorised Biography of Desmond Tutu

Description

Rabble-Rouser for Peace is the first book to tell the full story of how a boy from South Africa's poverty-stricken black townships became one of the world's best-known religious figures, a moral icon to those who work for peace and justice everywhere. Drawn from 30 years of the author's first-hand contact with Desmond Tutu, this is not only a vivid character study of a public figure with a unique capacity to communicate warmth, humour and compassion; it is also a rich account of his dynamic place in history. The story of Desmond Tutu's life tells a crucial part of South Africa's history and its movement from Apartheid towards peace, but it also follows the growth of one of the best loved and globally most recognised men of our time.

Marjorie Holmes: Two from Galilee

Two from Galilee

Description

Here from Marjorie Holines, one of the most beloved authors of our day, is the extraordinary bestselling novel that tells the story of Mary and Joseph as it has never been told before--the greatest love story of all. This is the story of two real people whose lives were touched by God: two people chosen by God to provide an earthly home for His Son. Here are Mary and Joseph-a teenage girl and a young carpenter-alone, frightened, in love, faced with family conflict, a hostile world and an awesome responsibility. It is a story for young and old alike; for everyone who finds the Christmas tale a source of timeless beauty and wonder, a compassionate, emotional novel of divine love

Pacey, atmospheric and thoroughly absorbing, these scripts practically read like novels. Each of the scripts is illustrated with full-colour screen grabs, ensuring the book appeals to broad audience. Introductions by the writers explain the inspirations for the first series and the fascinating process of creating a Doctor Who script. As the one book that ties directly into the first series, this is a must-have self-purchase or gift for all Doctor Who fans. For twenty-five years the unsolved kidnapping of two young girls has haunted Minneapolis homicide Two from Galilee download ebook pdf detective Lucas Davenport. Today, the bodies have been found. Today, he returns to a crime and a nightmare darker than any before." In Writing Without Teachers, well-known advocate of innovative teaching methods Peter Elbow outlines a practical program for learning how to write. His approach is especially helpful to people who get "stuck" or blocked in their writing, and is equally useful for writing fiction, poetry, and essays, as well as reports, lectures, and memos. The core of Elbow's thinking is a challenge against traditional writing methods. Instead of editing and outlining material in the initial steps of the writing process, Elbow celebrates non-stop or free uncensored writing, without editorial checkpoints first, followed much later by the editorial process. This approach turns the focus towards encouraging ways of developing confidence and inspiration through free writing, multiple drafts, diaries, and notes. Elbow guides the reader through his metaphor of writing as "cooking:" his term for heating up the creative process where the subconscious bubbles up to the surface and the writing gets good. 1998 marks the twenty-fifth anniversary of Writing Without Teachers. In this edition, Elbow reexamines his program and the subsequent influence his techniques have had on writers, students, and teachers.

The Mandala Colouring Book: The Fractal Geometry of Beauty

Description

This beautiful book contains 47 mandalas traced in black contours onto a thick, white offset paper. The main theme of the book is fractals: geometric structures that possess therapeutic power. Colouring these visible representations of mathematical realities endowed with a magnetic beauty tears us away from the busy thoughts that assail us and offers a unique outlet for expression, imagination and creative energy. Next to each group of fractal mandalas, there are corresponding mathematical functions which sit at the root of these unusual creations of unexpected characteristics. Secretly, the book intends to introduce mandala lovers to the exceptional reality of fractals-mathematical objects discovered in 1972 by the French and American mathematician Benoit Mandelbrot. With its large format and high-quality paper, this book offers many advantages that promote the use of different colouring techniques: pastels, coloured pencils, watercolours, ink, acrylic paint or felt pens-the thick paper prevents colours from bleeding through. This book is intended for all those who love drawing and colouring, both novices and experienced artists searching for relaxation and who want to discover fractals.

Rethinking Governance: The Centrality of the State in Modern Society download pdf

Stephen Bell,Andrew Hindmoor: Rethinking Governance: The Centrality of the State in Modern Society

Rethinking Governance: The Centrality of the State in Modern Society

Description

Several problems plague contemporary thinking about governance. From the multiple definitions that are often vague and confusing, to the assumption that governance strategies, networks and markets represent attempts by weakening states to maintain control. Rethinking Governance questions this view and seeks to clarify how we understand governance. Arguing that it is best understood as 'the strategies used by governments to help govern', the authors counter the view that governments have been decentred. They show that far from receding, states are in fact enhancing their capacity to govern by developing closer ties with non-government sectors. Identifying five 'modes' of government (governance through hierarchy, persuasion, markets and contracts, community engagement, and network associations), Stephen Bell and Andrew Hindmoor use practical examples to explore the strengths and limitations of each. In so doing, they demonstrate how modern states are using a mixture of governance modes to address specific policy problems. This book demonstrates why the argument that states are being 'hollowed out' is overblown.

Koba the Dread is the successor to Amis's celebrated memoir, Experience. It addresses itself to the central lacuna of twentieth-century thought: the indulgence of communism by Western intellectuals. In between the personal beginning and the personal ending, Amis gives us perhaps the best one hundred pages ever written about Stalin: Koba the Dread, Iosif the Terrible. The author's father, Kingsley Amis, was 'a Comintern dogsbody' (as he would come to put it) from 1941 to 1956. His second-closest, and later in life his closest friend, was Robert Conquest, whose book The Great Terror was second only to Solzhenitsyn's The Gulag Archipelago in undermining the USSR. Amis's remarkable memoir explores these connections. Stalin said that the death of one person was tragic, the death of a Rethinking Governance: The Centrality of the State in Modern Society download ebook pdf million a mere 'statistic'. Koba the Dread, during whose course the author absorbs a particular, a familial death, is a rebuttal of Stalin's aphorism.

Arthur Miller: The Crucible: (Penguin Orange Collection)

The Crucible: (Penguin Orange Collection)

Description

A haunting examination of groupthink and mass hysteria in a rural community The place is Salem, Massachusetts, in 1692, an enclave of rigid piety huddled on the edge of a wilderness. Its inhabitants believe unquestioningly in their own sanctity. But in Arthur Miller's edgy masterpiece, that very belief will have poisonous consequences when a vengeful teenager accuses a rival of witchcraft and then when those accusations multiply to consume the entire village. First produced in 1953, at a time when America was convulsed by a new epidemic of witch-hunting, "The Crucible" brilliantly explores the threshold between individual guilt and mass hysteria, personal spite and collective evil. It is a play that is not only relentlessly suspenseful and vastly moving but that compels readers to fathom their hearts and consciences in ways that only the greatest theater ever can. "A drama of emotional power and impact" "New York Post""

This book is about the most elite unit in the Israeli army, Talpiot. Instead of only being trained to fight the soldiers brought into this unit are taught how to think. The book details how this unit which specialises in teaching young cadets the military applications for computer science, physics and maths (properties needed for research and development) was conceived and developed in the wake of the Yom Kippur War, how the program came of age and how it surpassed even air force pilot training in terms of priority for the IDF. Instead of signing up for three years like most Israeli soldiers, if you are selected for Talpiot you must sign up for ten years. Graduates of this tiny unit, sometimes as few as 20 people a year are invited to enlist, have had a huge influence on the weapons Israel has developed through research and development and through the businesses they have founded after leaving the army, often using many The Crucible: (Penguin Orange Collection) download epub of the technologies they developed in the IDF. The book contains dozens of interviews with Talpiot graduates and some of the early founders of the program.
